Woodson's Fine Arts Critique Checklist

Below is a list of things that I ask myself throughout the process of forming an idea and creating a piece of art.

  1. What style is the work done in (ie. realistic, painterly, impressionism, expressionism etc.)
  2. What medium are you using and how does it work with the idea, subject and style?
  3. What is the subject matter? Why? Is the subject worth the work?
  4. Is the image thought provoking?
  5. Is the image creative?
  6. How is the composition? Does it work?
  7. Does the composition assist the idea or mood of the work?
  8. How does the color work in the piece, are they the right colors for the mood or subject?
  9. Is the picture universally or easily understood?
  10. Is it artistically innovative, new, or arresting to the artworld?
  11. Are you comfortable with the misinterpretations it may have?
  12. Does the work comment on our culture and era? What does it say?
  13. Is this something your SOUL wishes to express? ie.. are you using your talent of art wisely?
